Your Guide to a Germ Free RV Road Trip

Posted on May 27, 2020

As the country slowly starts to open back up in preparation for summer, more and more travelers will be itching to get outside and return to their favorite national parks and natural wonders. However, as the experts have warned, we cannot simply pretend things are totally back to normal. In order to enjoy a safe and healthy season this upcoming summer, extra precautions must be taken. Thankfully, when it comes to travel, RV road trips are one of the safest options available. You and your family unit are self contained – sharing a mobile kitchen, bedroom, and living space that will go with you everywhere. You will, of course, be coming into contact with other travelers along your journey so it is imperative you take some extra time to establish a germ free RV between stops. Here at 1st Choice RV we are excited to get people out on an adventure this summer, but we want to make sure everyone is prepared to do so safely and responsibly.

Thoroughly Clean all Surfaces Regularly

After returning to your RV between stops and when you have been exposed to other travelers, return to your motorhome and clean all of your hard surfaces before proceeding. You can mostly treat this like you would cleaning your own home – use a soapy solution, rinse with water – but you will want to finish up with a disinfectant. You should prioritize the most touched surfaces in your RV including countertops, appliances, doorknobs and handles, light switches, the steering wheel and dashboard, etc. Porous surfaces that you do not touch as often (such as any wood, rubber, or walls) should also be cleaned and disinfected regularly but will not require the major attention to detail that the more used surfaces will. Even if a surface does not appear dirty, you should go over it with disinfectant at least once each day.

Take Extra Care with Laundered Items

To further ensure a germ free RV, pay close attention to how you handle your laundered items. While 1st Choice RV typically will outfit your rental motorhome with required linens, it is good practice nowadays to bring your own. From sheets and covers to pillowcases and towels, you can eliminate some germ concerns by bringing linens from home. When it is time to wash them at a laundromat use the warmest water you can.

Don’t Forget Personal Hygiene

As with life outside of an RV road trip, personal hygiene is more important now than ever. You will be exposed to other people’s germs when filling up fuel, grocery shopping, or using different shared facilities at your chosen campsites. To prevent bringing germs into your RV and spreading them to your family, wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least twenty seconds. Carry hand sanitizer and use that after every time you come in contact with a surface from the outside world and especially when soap and water are not available. Try not to touch your face, cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze, and wear a mask when in highly trafficked areas. All of this will help prevent unwanted germs from entering your RV, ensuring a safe and fun road trip for your entire family.

While the world will be a lot different this summer, 1st Choice RV is ready for the challenge. We know people need to get out and experience nature, and we are eager to help facilitate those experiences. Between each RV rental, our expert staff will thoroughly deep clean and disinfect every corner of every vehicle. Of course we have always done this, but our attention to hygiene and disinfecting detail this summer will be impeccable. If you do the same while on the road, you and your family are sure to have an adventure that you won’t soon forget!
