RV vs. Condo – What is Best?

Posted on Feb 20, 2020

There are two major changes occurring that have pushed both RV and condo ownership into the limelight. On one end of the spectrum, baby boomers are starting to retire and have been for years. These new retirees are looking for second homes, vacation rentals, or to move closer to family and potentially grandkids that live further away. Both motorhomes and condos lend themselves nicely to all of these situations. On the other side of the spectrum are Millennials and young professionals who cannot yet afford homeownership. This demographic is seeking alternative lifestyles or affordable ways to toe into asset acquisition. Both RVs and condos can be excellent options here as well. While obviously we’re a bit bias at Expedition Motorhomes, the truth is both RVs and condos provide an excellent alternative, or addition, to homeownership. In the end, your personal situation and lifestyle will dictate what is best for you. Ask yourself the following questions and see which seems like a better fit!

City slicker or wilderness lover?

Both cities and nature have their perks, but if you are considering a major purchase such as a motorhome or condo you need to identify which is a bigger draw to you. Condos allow you to experience and enjoy all of the comforts of a big city and soak up all the culture and events that come along with it. Motorhomes allow you to park and live in nature, with scenery changing as often as you would like. With a condo in the city, it may be more difficult for you to escape into nature. With a motorhome in nature, you may be hard-pressed to find somewhere to park or camp in a city. At the end of the day, you need to decide which landscape is better for you to call home and which you would prefer to see as a visitor.

How do you define comfort?

When you define comfort what does it mean to you? The answer to this question will likely help you choose between an RV or a condo. RVs have a good amount of storage but will likely require you to pair down your belongings and pack efficiently. Condos allow you to spread out a bit more and have a permanent residence that feels more like a traditional home. Condos offer year-round stability and predictability, which for many is a very comfortable thing. For those that desire a bit more spontaneity and are okay with some uncertainty, RV life can provide the perfect level of comfort.

What is your preferred lifestyle?

Finally, and arguably most importantly, you need to identify your preferred lifestyle. Are you drawn to belongings or experience? Is impermanence exciting or terrifying? Can you work remotely or do you need to be in one spot for employment? Do you want to develop relationships with more permanent neighbours or meet new people on the road? As you and your partner discuss these questions you will likely land on a clear answer as to whether you should be exploring RVs or condos for future ownership.

Given the current state of the world, more and more people are exploring alternative living options. Retirees are shopping for condos and motorhomes as second homes closer to family or retirement options. The younger “YOLO” generations seem to be increasingly intrigued by adventure, experience and alternative lifestyles than what their parents provided. For each group, both motorhomes and condos provide excellent options to achieve what they are looking for. At Expedition Motorhomes we may be partial to life on the road, but at the end of the day we mostly just value an experience economy. Whether you are a condo lover or a motorhome enthusiast, the most important thing is that you are getting out, travelling, seeing the world, and having a whole lot of fun doing it!
