Best Guide to Explore Joshua Tree National Park

Posted on Sep 01, 2022

California is blessed to have so many incredible national parks at our fingertips, and here in Southern California, there is no better Orange County RV rental destination than Joshua Tree National Park. As the leading provider of motorhome rentals in Orange County, the experts at 1st Choice RV are constantly pointing people to this one of a kind natural wonder. Located just about 130 miles – or about three hours – east of 1st Choice RV, Joshua Tree boasts some of the best campgrounds in Southern California and has quickly become a favorite road trip destination for many Orange County RV rentals.

Camping in Joshua Tree National Park

Like most national parks camping is a huge allure to Joshua Tree, and there are plenty of beautiful campgrounds of which to choose. When planning your Orange County motorhome rentals visit to “J-Tree,” be sure to keep in mind national parks RV length restrictions. At Joshua Tree, your Orange County RV rentals may not exceed 25 feet if you hope to stay at Hidden Valley or White Tank. If you wish to camp in one of the many other campgrounds, vehicles need to be under 35 feet in length.

Reservations are required at Black Rock, Cottonwood, Indian Cove – all $25 per night – and Jumbo Rocks and Ryan campgrounds, which are $20 per night. None of these campgrounds have electric hookups, but Black Rock and Cottonwood boast water, flush toilets, fire grates, picnic tables, and dump stations. Jumbo Rocks and Ryan are a little more rustic, with pit toilets, picnic tables, fire grates and no water.

If you would like to try your hand at first-come first-served camping, Hidden Valley, White Tank, and Belle Campgrounds are your options. These are $15 each night, and a ranger will come by to help you register as you settle into your new home. These sites are highly competitive – especially during holidays and weekends – so it is always good to have a backup plan in place.

Experiencing Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is approximately 800,000 acres, and there are countless ways to experience the park. If you or your traveling companions have physical limitations, driving through the main paved roads of the park is a great way to experience much of its natural beauty. You will be able to cover most, if not all, of the park in a day and you can enjoy many stops for photos and scenic vistas as you go.

If you are looking for a little bit more activity, people come from all over the world to hike at J-Tree. From short hikes – like that of Arch Rock or the Discovery Trail – to more demanding walks – such as the Boy Scout Trail or Black Rock Canyon Panorama Loop – there truly is something for everyone.

For even more adventure, consider giving rock climbing a try. Joshua Tree is a major destination for climbers from all over the world, and you are almost guaranteed to spot some as you explore this park. If this is something that looks appealing to you, you can check out Climbers Coffee at the Hidden Valley Campground from 8 – 10 on weekends from fall to spring or hire a local guide to show you the ropes.

Some of the best Southern California campgrounds are located in Joshua Tree National Park and, as such, we always love to encourage those with Orange County motorhome rentals to point them to the desert and experience this natural wonder for themselves.
